Beacon Power, Active Power, and Evergreen Energy are top picks among utilities for leveraged trades.
Shares of Beacon Power Corp (NASDAQ: BCON), Active Power Inc (NASDAQ: ACPW) and Evergreen Energy Inc (NYSE: EEE) are either in a strong momentum or in the process of bottoming out.
Even though broader markets are looking positive for now, we do get clueless, directionless days in between. Follow the old maxim ‘trend is friend’ to make money in these days. While these stocks are not in the same league of bigger players in the utility space, they are great momentum plays and here is how:
Shares of Beacon Power Corp (NASDAQ: BCON) are currently trading at $1.22, up around 20 per cent from its 52 week low of $1.03. What is interesting is that this low was made in the end of May and the stock has bounced 20 per cent since then. This development stage company focuses on developing flywheel based energy storage technologies for utilities. This product has the novelty to make it darling of institutional investors. However, big investors have been shunning the stock lately.  It doesn’t make the stock any less attractive for traders. The reason is the $6 million hit it took on extinguishment of debt during the quarter ended March. The amount is very significant for a company which generates all of half a million in a quarter. The good news is the stock’s rebound after tanking heavily in the last quarter.
Active Power Inc (NASDAQ: ACPW)Â is going great and has increased around 9 per cent in the last week itself. Currently trading at $2.56, the stock is just at 15 per cent discount to its 52 week high of $3.03. However, it appears to be good momentum and can show another move of 4-5 per cent on the upside.
Evergreen Energy Inc (NYSE: EEE) is up 10 per cent in the morning trade. At $2.3, the stock is somewhere in between the year high and low of $4.98 and $0.52 respectively. The stock is a great momentum play, having jumped 30 per cent in the last month and it looks after every increase, there are more investors getting ready with the idea of owing EEE. Whether is remains evergreen or not is something we’ll see in future but as of now, the volume spike is showing immense trading interest coming back in the stock.
